The Trump phenomenon's most telling and defining moments – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of a few weeks, the American president began displaying the public his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions of the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to erect it.
He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and growing, and presently research predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – genuinely, no former commander would have conceived – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with the government.
We transitioned from 'the gentle will obtain the world' into 'the meek shall die of cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of hate who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, across decades rather than months, however it is still disturbing through similar means, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Christ that I grew up with, as conceptually the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and given that the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness about him since they are skeptics or agnostics or nones. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; however I believe that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is decidedly not the narrative of an authoritative monarch arising; conversely, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to escape undercover officers. The child matures in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message concerns compassion for fellow humans, specifically for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. Christ's response to aggression is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a way to educate the attacker; his crime policy is that if an individual takes your jacket you must offer them your pullover as well.
The obvious and direct reality that the Jesus of the gospels requests a type of profound affection concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christianity something of a scandalous religion: engaging for the general public, but due to its inherent radicalness requiring to be contained. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Finest of Us
Hence I have become inspired to see the determined opposition to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as substantial consolation to assist in constructing the initiative that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, featuring US banners throughout each rally and appeals to the finest aspects within national heritage.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you welcome them and receive them or refuse?
America is best defended, essentially, by relationship to the finest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by relationship to elements that cause it to be distinctive and wonderful, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it suggest feigning the worst of both America and religious tradition was nonexistent; it means both meekness and faith, a blend that committed American Christians should embrace.
