Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show draws close, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
