Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Chat.

A highly anticipated Pentagon report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in question included details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for transmitting classified information.

Serious Risk to Troops

The internal investigation found that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed information that would not have risked lives or compromised the mission. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
