Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such treatments should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
